Question to candidates

"If voted in as the Member for Kalamunda, would you support the proposed rezoning and development of the bushland reserve on Wilkins Rd, or would you support it's continued preservation?"

Disappointingly, we have not received a response from John Day or Matthew Hughes.

"Thank you for contacting me regarding this issue. After I read your comments in the local paper, I wrote to the editor in support of your position. My position is to find another site so I would support the Wilkins Road Reserve preservation.

Below is the letter to the editor (it didn't get published):
In regards to the article ‘Light on the horizon for aged care’, I would like to add my voice to that of Tim Colegate. I agree with his concerns that the rezoning of the Wilkins Rd from parks and recreation to urban is, once again, putting the environment last.

Black cockatoos are suffering an increasing degradation of their habitat with trees and bushland being removed for housing. There needs to be more value placed on the benefits of nature, walking through mature bushland, sharing time and space with birds and other critters and simply enjoying time outdoors.

Kalamunda offers beautiful bush walks, stunning wild flowers and birdlife, which are magnets to tourists. Attracting visitors to our beautiful area is important to the many small businesses that operate in the Shire. Surely there are other sites, disused buildings or already levelled land, that would be better suited to a nursing home.

There is a need for more aged care beds in the Kalamunda area, however there also needs to be suitable public transport, shopping and health care facilities to support such developments."

BOWYER, Murray  -  Julie Matheson for Western Australia
"Agree with all the points made by your group on the website. There must be other sites in the built up area for this plan. Age care is essential as we get older, but this site offers fire risks and loss of habitat for wildlife. Kalamunda is a special place for which we love and cherish.

We are currently going thru similar issues with a parcel of land near home. I have lived in the Kalamunda/Gooseberryhill area all my life and value the flora and fauna of the area. The bush for ever zoning should mean bush forever we keep hearing of our declining bushland and wildlife yet we continue to destroy some of our most vital resources for a financial gain. Other areas must be suitable for this development."

COLYVAS, Evazelia  -  Micro Business Party
"From what I have read on the matter, the plan seems ill-conceived.  I would not support this rezoning."

DAY, John  -  Liberal Party
"On behalf of Mr Day, thank you for your correspondence. This will be attended to at the first opportunity"

"I agree that this land should be left as it is especially when it is available for people to wander through. If it is removed I agree with you that it will never be replaced. I do think that fire hazards should be dealt with but when you have land that is a virtual classroom it should be left alone for us all to enjoy. As you stated the area is cap-rock, making any construction difficult, noisy and expense is unnecessary. As the sewerage is not adjacent to the reserve, but so far away I can't see the reason for changing things from what they are. "
